Nestled in the serene countryside of Viterbo, Castello di Montecalvello stands as a testament to Italy’s rich architectural heritage. This 11th-century castle, originally constructed as a fortified residence, has witnessed centuries of history, evolving through the medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. Its stone walls, majestic towers, and sprawling gardens provide a picturesque backdrop that evokes a sense of timeless elegance.
In this historic setting, we have curated the materials and finishes of our existing pieces to complement the castle’s essence. For example, we opted for travertine over polished marble for the coffee table, and selected sumptuous velvets in subdued tones for the 280 sofa. This thoughtful adaptation pays homage to the castle’s storied past, particularly its association with the Polish-French painter Balthus, who owned and gradually restored it starting in 1970. We admire the love Balthus poured into the castle, a sentiment that inspired our approach to this unique project.
